Is boric acid not effective against termites?

No. No. It is highly effective.

Boric acid termite repellents are not yet widely used in Japan.

Boric acid-based termiticides still have a short history in Japan.

They are common ant repellents in Europe and the United States, but for a long time, boric acid has not been certified by various organizations. It has passed performance tests without any problems, and it is known that its effects are more semi-permanent than those of agrichemical-based termiticides that are generally available, and it has also been proven to be effective against non-native species (American canid termites) for which agrichemical-based termiticides are ineffective, but for a long time it wasn’t certified. After that, various problems were solved, and now all companies have obtained certification.
However, you need to be careful. There is a way to use boric acid against termites, not optimal. It is “the house already has termites”. Boric acid is not food toxicity. Therefore, it is characterized by the fact that you can not kill termites on the spot. Therefore, it is the view of our company that boric acid treatment alone cannot cope with the termites that have already occurred. So what should you do?
In that case, the method is to use the existing pesticide based termite repellents (insecticides) to kill the termites, and then treat them with boric acid-based termite repellents to protect them for a long period of time.

It is desirable to treat the entire main structural wood part of the house with boric acid at the time of new construction if at all possible. Generally, the termite treatment is carried out up to 1m from the foundation, but in the case of the non-native species of American white termites, the termites have feathers and invade from the attic, so there is a high possibility that the termites will not be able to prevent feeding damage within 1m.

I think you have understood the use of boric acid above. However, there are two problems here. They are the following.
The housing companies that cannot treat the whole house with pesticide termiticides and the termite extermination companies that do not use boric acid first of all, the pesticide termiticides cannot be used on the whole house because the harmful ingredients volatilize and float in the air. In the case of recent years, it is even more difficult to use them in the case of high airtight, highly insulated houses. Due to these circumstances, we have received consultations from several housing manufacturers and are now planning to adopt it as a standard specification for high-performance housing.
The second problem we often hear from our customers is that the housing companies and subcontractors do not use boric acid. The truth is that the routes for obtaining boric acid-based termiticides are quite limited, and there are far more housing companies that can’t handle them than the ones that can. Therefore, even if the customers want to use boric acid termite repellents, there are many reasons why they will try to talk you out of using them. The only major manufacturer that uses boric acid treatment is Sweden House. (As of 2020)

Also, termite control companies are reluctant to use boric acid termiticides because they may put pressure on their own business. Ordinary agricultural chemical termiticides volatilize after about five years and lose their effectiveness, so there is always a demand for reapplication. However, boric acid does not evaporate or run off unless it comes into contact with water, so there is no future demand for reapplication. For the above reasons, it is possible that termite control companies are reluctant to handle boric acid. In this case, they will induce you to stop the boric acid treatment for some reason or other.
